Review :
a Must Own for Readers Who Want to Embrace ALL That They Are!
8 years ago when I began my journey to being fat positive in earnest, I had the privilege of buying the first edition of Big Big Love when it was still in print and I am not merely spouting cliches when I say that it changed my life overnight. For the first time in my life I was reading a joyful "how to" sex manual that was geared towards people with bodies like mine. It was a pleasant surprise to find that Big Big Love was more than just your typical sex manual, it was also an invaluable guide to living your life with joie de vivre as a fat person. Big Big Love included such priceless chapters on how to deal with well meaning loved ones who constantly critique your weight and it even offered clever comebacks to comments that come from less than well meaning sources. Big Big Love along with Marilyn Wann's Fat!So? became my constant bedside companions as I learned to navigate through life as a queer fat woman of color.

I am happy to say that the revised edition far...
Not what I expected.
I was hoping this book would contain more advice and tips on sex with a plus size woman. It didn't really have much helpful advice, instead articles geared toward upping a womans self-esteem so that she can do these things. There was a lot of interesting information in it, though, and I'll definitely look back at it for references on things.

wasn't what I was looking for
It seemed to be more of a pep talk than guide. I was looking for ideas on technique and positions to have better sex.

"You're the Man... Act Like One!"

Look, I know you're not a mind reader, so I'm going to be blunt...

The majority of women like to be fucked. And I mean really fucked.

Yes, the media has lied to you.

Sure, there are some women who want to lie on their backs, look into your eyes, and gently rock back and forth, but most of us want you to channel the power of the Sun through your penis and give us a good, solid pounding. Act like you want it, for God's sake!

In this book, I'm going to lay out exactly what the majority of women want and show you exactly how to give it to them. I've got a section just for you and one for your female partner, so you can feel 100% comfortable letting loose on her vagina in the way she's secretly craving.

Some of the topics we'll cover...

The Alpha Male - It's more than just being an ex-fratboy douchebag, who thinks he's still on the high school football team. I'll clue you in.

Dirty Talk - Trust me, she wants it. If she didn't, she'd fuck a mime. Speaking of, did you know Marcel Marceau was divorced three times? Enough said.

Role Playing - How she really feels about pretending to be the babysitter, a whore, and a student looking for a little "extra credit." I'll take you through her top Alpha Male fantasies...including one so controversial, I can't even mention it here.

The Art of Being Assertive - Sack up and take control! What to do...and what not to do.

Sexual Communication - Both you and your partner have needs and good communication, both verbal and non-verbal, is crucial when it comes to getting them on the table. I'll show you how to communicate "Alpha Male Style." You'll learn what to say...and how to say it.

Now that I've got you all hyped up and extremely aware of the need to please your woman, let's make that happen!

What are you waiting for? Buy the book already!

Review :
Better than most
I got this book and read it and was very happy with it. Most sex advice books suck, they only tell you stuff that anyone who is in a committed relationship with good communication would know, they are written for teens because they are the only ones who would not know that advice. This book on the other hand tells you about what girls want but don't know how to ask for, and tells you how to slowly introduce some new, fun sexual activities to your relationship. The only detraction I can say about this book is it is very simple, now that may sound like a good thing but I would have liked to explore some more of the psychological aspects of the sex described in the book and why we have lost this in our modern relationships because of the ways we are raised, but I like to explore things deeply. Over all though it was a good short read that actually did help my sex life a little. I would place this book right between "sex advice" and "kinky" and I would recommend this book to couples that...
Great Book

I grew up a dork ..... wish my dad ... or mom had given me this book back when I was in Highschool .... or Jr. High for that reason .... sure would have saved me a bunch of junk along the way !!!!

Couples Guide To Satisfying A Woman's Desires for an Alpha Male Lover
Like me, you were probably just innocently walking along or surfing when this the title of this book reached out and grabbed your curiosity and wouldn't let go. Since the book's title has your undivided attention, just what is the book about? It's a self-help guide/instruction book/sex manual written by a woman, a feminist no less, who obviously knows what she is talking about. How can a San Francisco feminist write a book like this one? As she says, "This is not a relationship advice book. This is a guide to pleasing your woman in bed." It's her experience that one of the reasons "why women like men who are more assertive in the bedroom" is feminism. "How could something that inspires women to be strong and in control be the same reason why she wants her partner to be an alpha male in the bedroom?" These are the questions that the author answers in this fascinating 113-page book. It's impossible to answer most of the questions brought up in this tome in this short review, but the...

With two new chapters by the author. If we all want love, why is there so much conflict in our most cherished relationships? To answer this question, says noted psychologist David Buss, we must look into our evolutionary past. Based on the most massive study of human mating ever undertaken, encompassing more than ten thousand people of all ages from thirty-seven cultures worldwide, The Evolution of Desire is the first book to present a unified theory of human mating behavior. Now in a revised and updated edition, Buss's classic presents the latest research in the field, including startling new discoveries about the evolutionary advantages of infidelity, orgasm, and physical attractiveness.

Review :
Useful but misleading
I teach evolutionary psychology in college, organizing my classes around the "logic of inquiry." I use this book to illustrate cross-cultural investigation, including the pragmatic difficulties of getting good data from massive studies. For that purpose, the book has its uses.
However, unless you are a critical, already-knowledgeable reader, this book may not be a good choice. The book exemplifies neither the state of the art nor a model of how to think soundly about the questions.
Buss's hypotheses tend to be very vague. Indeed, he often says things like, "Evolutionary psychology explains this constellation of traits," as if there were some one hypothesis held by all evolutionary psychologists. He rarely, if ever, presents alternative hypotheses from within evolutionary studies.
He presents little, if any, contradictory or complicating data, never shows what would be involved in falsifying his hypotheses, and never shows why his theory is better supported than...
From a Practical Perspective
I used this book and Buss' Evolutionary Psychology text book a few years back for a term paper in college. At the time I was in a troubled relationship and it opened me up in understanding people's behavior. It clued me in on how the mind works and why men and women seek certain partners. It's not personal, but about survival. Whether this book is scientific factual or proven is no concern to me. Every choice can be traced to our survival instinct. I've recommended this to friends and colleagues over the years to help them understand people and in that sense I recommend it.

Not as good as Buss's "Evolutionary Psychology" textbook
I've read almost all the evolutionary psychology books, and the best (by far) is "Evolutionary Psychology: The New Science of the Mind," by David M. Buss. It's a college textbook but not dry or boring. The writing is clear and easy to understand. Every topic in the field is covered, including men's and women's mating strategies, parenting and kinship, cooperation, conflict, etc.
"The Evolution of Desire" is not as good. It seems out of date, as if the original edition 1994 edition were just updated here and there to produce new 2003 edition. A political agenda or bias is seen "between the lines," that isn't in "Evolutionary Psychology." And the writing is confused and haphazard.
In "The Evolution of Desire," Buss presumes that men and women are fundamentally different. This view was popular in early 1990s as "backlash" against 1970s feminists saying that men and women are the same. However, current thinking (e.g., "Sex, Time, and Power," by Leonard Shlain) takes the...

"I was worried at first. Then it really wasn't so bad after all."

"I remember my brothers weren't allowed to hit me in the chest anymore. I was kind of pleased about that."

What mysterious condition are these now grown-up girls talking about? Ah, yes, puberty! With scads of personal stories and an abundance of useful, detailed information about girls' changing bodies and feelings, author Lynda Madaras and her daughter Area Madaras have expanded their guide for girls on the verge of change. First published in 1983, the bestselling classic has been revised and updated several times over the years to keep up with ever evolving facts and wisdom about puberty in girls. In this third edition, the authors continue their straight talk on the menstrual cycle, reproductive organs, breasts, emotional changes, puberty in boys, body hair, pimples, masturbation, and all the other fun, scary, and interesting things that go along with growing up. Filled with anecdotes, illustrations, diagrams, and honest, sensitive, nonjudgmental information for the young girl, the revised edition also addresses the new scientific facts about when a girl actually begins puberty (earlier than previously thought), advice on "female athletic syndrome," eating disorders, unwanted attention because of early development, and information on eating right, exercise, AIDS, STDs, birth control, and so much more. A welcome, reassuring book for parents and daughters, designed with the understanding that some girls and parents will want to read it together, and some will want to read it on their own; without a doubt, though, all will benefit. Review :
Great book for teens, pre-teens and parents alike

This is a great book for anyone interested in the process of growing up. I am a 15 year old girl and my mom got me this book when I was 10 years old, and I love it. It answered all my questions about growing up. Some people think that this book is too advanced for your average pre-teen, but having been there just a few years ago, I can assure you that it is not. The book provides a lot of information that I was curious about, yet too embarrassed to ask about. Even being so young when I got the book, I can assure you that it did not cause me to grow up any faster... it only caused me to grow up at a normal speed with more information. I still read the book as I experience new things, and because of this book and the topics it discussed, I was more assured about the changes going on inside of me.

Wonderful book!
My mother bought this book for me when I was ten. Her mother had never explained any aspect of puberty or menstruation to her and she was afraid of giving me confusing or incorrect information. I remember reading this book cover to cover at least five times and going through it again as I was a teenager and had questions. I developed earlier than most girls and this book was a reassuring source of information. It not only taught me a lot about my body and what was happening, but was a boost to my self-esteem because it talked about differences as being o.k. I haven't read the new edition, mine is 15 years old, but I can't imagine anything better for a mother to give her daughter as she enters puberty. It opened a line of communication between my mom and me about a topic that is not always easy to discuss with your parents at that age. I would recommend this book to ANY parent for his/her daughter.

Girls' High School Basketball Coach/AD jlori81@gte.net
My wife and teenage daughters teased me about reading this book. But as someone who works with girls in sports, I felt it was important to know what is going on with girls at this age. Was the book informative? Yes. It had two strong points: 1) It treats sexuality and associated taboo subjects as normal parts of life. Really, I cannot understand why some of the other reviewers thought the information was too graphic; 2) I was particularly intrigued with some of the sex-related questions young people ask. At first, their questions seemed ridiculous and so naive but then you realize they ask them because we treat the subjects of puberty and sexuality with such secrecy. No wonder some of the questions are so hilarious! The book treats each of the major subjects in a simple straightforward way. There is nothing difficult to understand and young women are supported for their decisions and preferences. The author also makes some suggestions ( based on adult wisdom and her...

Review :
Best Birthing/Labor book for MOM too!
I've delivered 7 children and am now pregnant with my 8th. WHERE WAS THIS BOOK WHEN I WAS PREGNANT WITH MY 1st?!?!? Everything the book said the mother would feel was RIGHT on!!! The title is deceiving because it says it is for a "Birth Partner". It would definitely be helpful to them, but I got this book for myself and found it even more educating then I expected.
I especially appreciated that it didn't seem to have a hidden agenda or preference. Having had hospital/epidural births and natural births myself, I can see the benefits of both as each birth is different. I never felt there was an anti-home birth or anti-hospital birth sentiment to it. It was information for BOTH of them.
My favorite part was the detailed What-is-Mom-going-to-feel during _______ stage of labor. Then there were suggestions on how to relieve that, etc.
I highly highly recommend this book. I have read many (SCADS!!!) of birthing books and this is my favorite so far.

My wife expected me to be the birth expert
As a first time dad i wanted to be very much the involved father from the first step. I had taken enough birth and baby caring classes to understand the basics for the new baby to baby. My wife and i wanted to do a (as much as possible) natural birth. This means no drugs and no surgery. Yo go girl! What really scared me was that from everyone i talked with, complications occur and you sometimes had to make a quick decision on limited knowledge on the spot.

This is where i think that Penny did a great job of breaking things down. She has a great background in natural births. So many tips for comforting the mother. Birthing is a marathon. After 20 hours watching my wife go through labor, i could still remember some tips to help her cope. It was great for someone needing to know how the last few hours of pregnancy and the first first hours of newborn life can be,

Thanks for making the book read more like a series of personal accounts vs. charts and studies...
Excellent book, terrible e-book
As a new dad with a now 7-month old son, this book helped me prepare for what my wife was going to go through and give me the tools and confidence to help her through everything she went through. I would recommend this book to all new fathers. HOWEVER, do not get the e-book. There are lots of tables and pictures that do not translate well into the smaller e-book format. Also, as a reference, this is much better used as a physical book.
