Research shows that building muscle helps the body burn more calories 24/7 and that resistance training is the most effective way to torch body fat. Yet that message is still lost on many women who fear that weight lifting will make them bulky, turn their skin green, and give them Incredible Hulk muscles like their boyfriends'. Women have more options than step aerobics or running on a treadmill to shed pounds: They can weight-train in a very specific manner designed to make the most of a woman's unique physiology.

Lift to Get Lean
is the first beginner's guide to strength training from Women's Health that is written specifically for women by a woman. Holly Perkins is a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) who has been teaching the fat-burning secrets of weight training exclusively to women for more than 20 years. Perkins doesn't follow men's rules when it comes to building muscle. Her Lift to Get Lean delivers a three-step system: Technique, Movement Speed, and the Last 2 Reps Rule, which make all the difference in developing the kind of strong, lean, and sexy body women want. Perkins offers four different 90-day training programs that efficiently build functional strength along with leaner legs, stronger arms, and a sexier butt.

Highly Recommended for Women with gym Access & Consistency--Long, Thorough Review!
The first aspect of the book that I liked is that the introduction covers how strength training is different for women, which is exactly why I was looking for a female author on the topic. At the beginning of “Part I: The Foundation,” her journey into fitness, and how she optimized a strength training routine is covered. In “The Secret to Getting Lean for Life,” she covers deeper motivation to stay on track. In “A New System Designed Precisely for Women” she answered my major question, which was: “Do I need a gym membership in order to do the program(s) in this book? The answer: yes! Her reasoning is that you need progressive resistance and specific equipment i.e. a leg curl machine. This program cannot be easily modified for a few sets of weights. “Why Strength Training Matters to Your Health” she cites studies that show how gaining muscle mass is beneficial to your overall health like having a higher metabolic rate, increases in...

Before you buy this book, know this: it requires a gym membership. Great advice and workouts!

An Amazing Workout Plan For Women
I have started this plan and was super sore after my first workout, and I do strength training on a regular basis as it is! So far I think this is an amazing plan. I love the way she really customizes everything for the woman's body. Trust me, she doesn't dumb it down for women, instead she customizes it for our bodies which are different from men's.
The reasons I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it would be nice to be able to submit questions to Holly regarding the plan. For instance, my gym doesn't have the prone position leg curl machine, just the seated leg curl machine, so it would be nice to be able to ask if there would be any modifications for that machine. Also, There are a couple of exercises where I question where she placed the "pause," after the "easy" instead of after the "hard." I tried to access the videos at both Holly's website and the Women's Health website and couldn't find them. Otherwise, I think this is an amazing plan and...

Women's recovery can differ from men's, and each person's recovery is in many ways unique. That's why Stephanie Covington has designed this workbook A Women's Way Through the Twelve Steps Workbook to help a woman find her own path-and find it in terms especially suited to the way women experience not just addiction and recovery but also relationships, self, sexuality, and everyday life.Deepening and extending the lessons of a book that has helped countless women, this workbook makes A Women's Way Through the Twelve Steps that much more measured, meaningful, and clear. Unlike many ''rewritten'' Twelve Step interpretations for women, this guide works with the original Step language, preserving its spirit and focusing attention on its healing message. In sections devoted to each of the Twelve Steps, Covington blends narrative, self-assessment questions focused on a feminine definition of terms such as ''powerlessness'' and ''letting go,'' guided imagery exercises, and physical activities. Designed to be used in conjunction with A Women's Way Through the Twelve Steps, this workbook helps deepen and extend understanding of the lessons taught there and further empowers each woman to take ownership of her recovery process as well as her growth as a woman.

Heads Up Ladies!
This is definitely a head's up and listen up for women in recovery....using this in conjunction with "A Womans' Way Through the Twelve Steps" is a sure way to add to any other 12 step program that you may be using. I am a person who has been in recovery for 10 years, and found that many women's issues were not being addressed and this combination is an absolute winner. It can be used by yourself, working with a sponsor or in a group ..some wonderful "aha's" have been experienced and so many women helped in this process. Read it...do it....you won't be sorry.

Excellent Tool for any woman in recovery
I have used this book personally and professionally for recovery issues. I can't reccommend it highly enough. If you or someone you care about is in early recovery or even if you are in recovery a long time and could use a refresher, this book is phenomenal. It is written simply, with no "jargon" and is very helpful in guiding you to focus on what you need to in order to live a purposeful and peaceful life in recovery, step by step. Progress not perfection. I give it to all my female counseling clients.

A woman's Way is a terrific guide
A Woman's Way Through the twelve steps workbook is a great tool to accompany Stephanie Covington's book "A Womans Guide through the Twelve Steps. The questions are insightful and to the point without being overwhelming. I have found these two books to be an immeasurable asset to working the twelve steps.
