Lovely book! I did learn a great deal. But the authors focus on "cool" passion and suggest staying away from "hotness" (such as oral sex and clitoral stimulation). I am reading two other tantra books (Urban Tantra and Tantra for Erotic Empowerment) that combine the two approaches and encompass more/different forms of love making techniques. For me, the latter two are a better fit.

Every teen and parent should own one

This is the best book on being a teenager that I have ever read! And this should mean a lot to you coming from a teen (I'm a 15 year old male). It's different from other books in that it encourages teens to make their own decisions in life. It doesn't come out and say, "No! Sex is bad! You will rot in hell if you have sex before you are married!" Instead, it gives equal reasons of why to have sex and why not to and then describes all the means of birth control. But it doesn't just deal with sex, it also touches on emotions that you might have through adolecence, masturbation, what you can do if you do become pregnent, and even drugs.

Terrific for your teenager

I bought this for my 15 year old son for reference and for his information.

His father won't talk to him about sex and he is too embarrassed to talk with me. In fact, I had to leave it in his room and he swore he wouldn't look at it. That he had learned everything he needed to know in 1 week of sex ed at school (!)

I came across this guide several years ago, and even then was thrilled by the overall tone of the book, as well as the detailed info on subjects one may not even have thought about right away when thinking sex...such as the composition of semen, and why it smells and tastes the way it does.

Should be required reading for the entire human race
Plainly spoken, light, oft humorous, hits every topic, and I love that it addresses sexual "health" questions you didn't know you had-esp. for the opposite sex. I feel that part of it debunks the notion that our bodies are "gross" and its functions are revolting. (Well-some of them. *wink*) A good portion of the book is technique, but it's so much more than that. Even if you've read all the booksl, even if you think you know all there is to know, read this anyway. You will not only learn something (I had no idea there was actually a biochemical reason Sperm burns your eyes, and it does btw) , you will enjoy the learning process. Could easily function as a "get things rolling" book for couples, or an educational manual. I wish there was a little more on the emotional role of sex, but then again with phrases like this : "If you aren't equal partners in sex, you aren't equal partners period. Whenever I read a book edited by Tristan Taormino, I look forward to her introductions just as much - and sometimes more - than to the stories. This is no exception. She starts out by giving us readers some heartening news about how kink has become more and more "mainstream" in recent years, thanks to the internet. It's about time, right? Then she proceeds to explain how and why this guide is relevant at this point in time. Let's just say that, if I'd been highlighting interesting and well-crafted sentences in her writing, the whole introduction would have been highlighted. For instance, the following sentence defining what kinksters do when they get together in public events:

I love love love Tristan Taormino, but...
This book just seems like it hasn't nailed down what its audience actually is. For example, the two sections of the book both begin assuming you're a rank novice who doesn't know what S&M is an abbreviation of, and who has never played dirty-cop with a sex partner. And that's great - I'm always on the hunt for beginner-friendly books, things I can pass along to my friends for education or entertainment.

But then it moves onto essays on animal roleplay, or age play, or Mollena Williams' piece on edge play that includes scenes of rape, incest, gay-bashing, and a bit where a handicapped person gets thrown out of their wheelchair and beaten, and I go "oh thank god I didn't lend this to anyone yet." Don't get me wrong - these essays are brilliantly written, informative, and interesting, and definitely worth reading, but they are probably not necessary or useful in a book that *seems* to be aimed at beginners.

I am familiar with my anatomy and have a pretty good imagination; what I found useful in this book had little to do with technical sex. Newman provides some chapters early in the book with thought-provoking questions about relationships and flavors of sexuality. One chapter talks about sitting down and thinking beforehand about what you would like in a relationship other than really hot sex. You know, the things parents should be teaching their kids rather than just saying, "Oh, you'll know Mr./Mrs. Right when you meet him/her." One list contains a number of, shall we say, "non-vanilla" sexual activities and asks you to think about what you would and would not want to do at this point. That was a bit of an eye-opener, but was intriguing as well.

Coming out in my early 40's, I found these issues to be of paramount importance to me. Newman's book presents these issues clearly and asks questions that helped me get a better grip on my wants and needs.
