amazing, revelatory, empowering

as a survivor of rape and sexual abuse, i have read a bunch of books on the aftereffects of assault, being a survivor, et cetera, but most of the stuff out there is pretty dry and basic and i just didn't find it very helpful. this book is direct, incredibly right-on, it gives you hands on techniques for staying present in your body, it includes an amazing discussion of triggering. it also uses down to earth language and is not too self-help-y, and it acknowledges that certain terms might be alienating and medicalizing for some people.
FYI: although it is targetted at female survivors of child sexual abuse, i myself am not a woman, and the sexual assault/abuse i experienced occured during my teenage years, not my childhood. i still found the book very useful. there is also a great chapter aimed at partners of survivors.

I have been waiting for this book for years!!

When I first found this book I was hoping it would be different, as a healing survior I have read alot of help books, and although comforting, they usually told me why I had the problems I did but didnt give me much advice on how to start living and having fun again in life, this book was amazing at that, it was what I had been looking to read since I started wanting to heal!! It would be a great book for anyone wanting good sexual information in a society that dosnt offer that much, I found it straight forward and honest and funny ..great book!! I loooved it!!:)

I've been waiting for someone to write a book like this
For the past eight years, I have been slowly, painstakingly discovering for myself many of the techniques that Staci Haines details in this book. As far as I am aware, I am not a survivor of child sexual abuse, but I have many of the same difficulties - lack of trust, unclear boundaries, easily triggered, difficulty being sexually present.
I looked at books on recovery; they seemed only to tell me that it was OK to not have sex. I looked at TONS of books on sex and none addressed my difficulties - until The Survivor's Guide to Sex. I can say from my own experience that it's not easy to put Staci's suggestions into practice, nor do the rewards necessarily come quickly. But for some of us, this is the only way we're going to reclaim our sexuality.
I highly recommend this book if you feel numb, shut-down, or angry during sex, whether or not you are a "survivor". Chances are you have some deep healing work to do, and this book is the only guide I've seen for doing...

Nothing New

This is the third book with almost the same title. "The Strap-on Book" and "The Ultimate Guide to Strap-on Sex" covered this subject adequately long ago and not much has changed.

The real problem with these narrow-focus books is that they are little more than magazine articles plumped up with worthless filler so they can be sold over and over. These 160 pages could be reduced to a single chapter in another book . . . But wait, they already have.

For the best $$$ deal, buy "Anal Sex for Women" or "Anal Sex for Couples." The former has better pictures and the latter has more details with less fluff. Plus you get all the extras in a better package.

I bought this book because I was interested in learning more about the subject. The sex book genre is full of books that have an interesting subject, but appear to be written by 5th graders, and then printed without being edited. In addition, the publishing quality is frequently fairly low, which makes for a bad reading experience. This book, however, was a pleasant surprise. Mixed Review

The Good Vibrations Guide to Better Sex must be taken in its context. While it does a fabulous job on philosophy and manages to appeal (and include!) everyone on the sexual spectrum, it is disappointingly light on technique. If you are of the more jaded persuasion and are fairly comfortable with your body and sexual appetites, this is not the book for you (there is not much to reccommend it in the way of new information). I was impressed to see that the sex toy section of the book was of notable length and expertise (but these are the folks who do it best) and to encounter the totally unapologetic enthusiasm for the kinkier aspects of the art of sex. It is a good guide for those starting out, but not of much use to the more experienced participant. (However helping out the good gals of Good Vibes is always a worthy cause!)

Your sex book, not your mother's.

This book is packed with real information about the 90's (and beyond) views on sex. There is helpful information on all sorts of activities for all styles, orientations, and pleasures. Not only does it explore techniques to enhance your sex life, it touches on taboo topics that other manuals like to ignore. This book touches on all possible topics. As a therapist, I believe that there is no manual on the market that will be more important for both singles and couples as this one. Read it, learn it, and enjoy!

One sex book, lots of Ideas!

I really liked this book because it didn't make assumptions about my sexual orientation or what kinds of things I should like sexually. It just sort of presented a whole lot of options, and laid them out like a big feast, and then invited me to taste whatever I wanted. I have trouble coming with my partner, so I found the information about using vibrators with partners, and enjoying mutual masturbation, really helpful. I also got some good ideas for better oral sex, which is kinda intimidating to me. I like this sex book because I can go back to it whenever I want to learn something new.

Ok for what it is.

Honestly, there's nothing really wrong with this book, it just seems a little on the thin side. It's like the Cliff Notes version of Jack Morin's book (which I highly recommend). Oh, I suppose I should explain: I bought this for my wife so that she might get more comfortable with anal sex. After I bought this, I bought Morin's book, and that's when the real fun began. What started out as an attempt to get my wife into anal sex turned out to be grand experiment for me. Now, analingus and two-way anal sex is a regular part of our marital relations. Let's be honest here: dildos and strap-ons can be for straight men too.

Perfect for the tentative wife!

Ms. Taormino does a wonderful job of holding the hand of the female apprehensive about the idea of anal sex! This is the anal sex 101 book written by a woman for a woman. It starts with the basics and continues on with suggestions / recommendations on how to get maximum enjoyment from this naughty pleasure. The emphasis is three-fold: communication, time and lubricant.

I bought this book for my wife to rouse her interest in the subject. When You're Ready

This is a phenomenal book, as is Staci Haines' other book The Survivor's Guide to Sex. It has an extensive list of resources at the end. The author speaks with a clear, engaging voice. But you have to be ready for it, as the author is very clear and direct about the subject matter. I have been consciously healing the wounds of child sexual abuse for over 17 years - in the beginning with lots of therapy, both group and individual, and in recent years, through journaling, prayer, yoga. Healing comes in layers. Currently I am celibate because I am too darn afraid. Staci Haines's book gives me a roadmap for what to expect when I finally am able to put myself out there. She assumes the reader is familiar with dissociation, numbing, leaving the body, PTSD reactions, etc., etc. She just picks up from there, and talks about having sex that feels good and safe, even though you have these issues.

Better than I expected

I purchased this book about 6 months after I'd checked out the older version from the Library of the survivors' group that I attend. I found the overall tone of the book to be hopeful, positive and encouraging, but also challenging. The author's premise is that it's not only possible to have a healthy sexual self after surviving sexual abuse, it can be the most dynamic part of a survivor's healing practice. The author also cautions that it won't be easy, and that it takes courage and self-love to take on this work. I particularly liked the chapters on Dissociation and Intimacy.

A Must Read for Partners of Survivors
This is a hard hitting and revealing description of what has occured to the survivor. Many snipett descriptions are revolting for the partners to read. For any partner of a survivor this will help you gain a insight in helping understand just how vile perps are and what the survivor lives with on a daily. The perps are creatures of such evil that society should eradicate them there should be no attempt made to rehabilitae or otherwise allow them to remain in society.

After reading this I have a whole different perspective and respect of my mate and the inner strength she has. The life with a survivor is definitely the biggest rollercoaster ride I have ever experienced. I now am able to understand on some level why there have been times of disconnect, distance, and even the separation. It doesn't make the pain go away but it does make it more understandable. How I wish this book had existed when I was a teenager. It would have saved me a rap sheet of frustrated lovers and broken relationships as long as a porn star's pork sword with a pommel on the end. Men, if you're really serious about being a good lover, go out and buy this book. It will be the best fiver you ever spent. In fact, I'm thinking of buying my girlfriend the author's companion volume, The Ultimate Guide to Fellatio, next Christmas. Not that she needs it, you understand.

I was a bit scared to read this.
I bought this book after running into several folks over a ten year period that were into polyamory--having more than one lover at a time.

To be honest, I was half way between fear and weariness in my emotional take on this book. Fear? I was and am monogamous so fear for sure; but weary of judging my two or three friends who were oriented this way with multiple lovers. I felt their honesty and candor and approach to sexual integrity was scoring far better than mine. Not to mention more often! Yes, finding more integrity in their relationships than many of my church friends, some of whom were defending to the death their long dead marriages; lifeless, dry, sexless "relationships".

Whenever I read a book edited by Tristan Taormino, I look forward to her introductions just as much - and sometimes more - than to the stories. This is no exception. She starts out by giving us readers some heartening news about how kink has become more and more "mainstream" in recent years, thanks to the internet. It's about time, right? Then she proceeds to explain how and why this guide is relevant at this point in time. Let's just say that, if I'd been highlighting interesting and well-crafted sentences in her writing, the whole introduction would have been highlighted. If you are kinky, or think you may be kinky, or you hope to possibly find out that you're kinky, I can't recommend this book enough. I don't care how long you've been in the scene, or how many pins are on your bar vest, you should have a copy of this book! I guarantee that there will be something in it that you didn't know, or haven't tried, or haven't looked at in quite that way before. And chances are very, very good that there will be something among those new areas that will make you curious, if not tempted. The ultimate guide to kink is a fantastic variety of essays on so many different ways to express our kinky sides, all written by people who really know their stuff in the area they're writing about.

While I didn't recognize all of the names in the list of authors, I recognized enough for it to read like a Who's Who of the BDSM education circuit, all grouped together in one convenient tome to tell you all about the areas about which they're most passionate. While the...
I love love love Tristan Taormino, but...
This book just seems like it hasn't nailed down what its audience actually is. For example, the two sections of the book both begin assuming you're a rank novice who doesn't know what S&M is an abbreviation of, and who has never played dirty-cop with a sex partner. And that's great - I'm always on the hunt for beginner-friendly books, things I can pass along to my friends for education or entertainment.

But then it moves onto essays on animal roleplay, or age play, or Mollena Williams' piece on edge play that includes scenes of rape, incest, gay-bashing, and a bit where a handicapped person gets thrown out of their wheelchair and beaten, and I go "oh thank god I didn't lend this to anyone yet." Don't get me wrong - these essays are brilliantly written, informative, and interesting, and definitely worth reading, but they are probably not necessary or useful in a book that *seems* to be aimed at beginners.

I was a bit scared to read this.
I bought this book after running into several folks over a ten year period that were into polyamory--having more than one lover at a time.

To be honest, I was half way between fear and weariness in my emotional take on this book. Fear? I was and am monogamous so fear for sure; but weary of judging my two or three friends who were oriented this way with multiple lovers. I felt their honesty and candor and approach to sexual integrity was scoring far better than mine. Not to mention more often! Yes, finding more integrity in their relationships than many of my church friends, some of whom were defending to the death their long dead marriages; lifeless, dry, sexless "relationships".

With Taormino's interviews of 100 plus folks in alternative relationships, a few things stood out for me as a traditional type married and sometimes churchy guy. All of us could learn a good deal from Tristan's book here on the matter of communication and honesty. I've learned...

A number of good and okay books on nonmonogamy and polyamory have been published in the last several years. I read most of them: some were focused on particular forms of nonmonogamy; others dominated by a spiritual bent, others were just poorly written or edited. Some were downright Pollyanna-ish in their superficial treatment of the challenges of open relationships, occasionally reeking of smug superiority over less-evolved monogamous couplings.
