A guy's perspective
I am a guy. So I waited until I was not the first reviewer. Take my perspective with a grain of salt. I am a nanny for two girls (2 and 4), married for almost 15 years and my wife and I lead a small group for newly married couples to help them develop stronger marriages. I spend a fair amount of time reading and thinking about issues of sex and marriage.

Because most of my perspective is on married sex (and within a church based, Christian context), there are subjects I wish were handled differently. But on the whole I think it was a very good book and I glad that books like this are written.

That being said, the book really is two books that are written together. One part (these parts are mixed together, not a part one, part two) is the sexual health and care questions and answers. This was of less interest to me (I am a guy) but I did learn a few things and had a couple conversations with my wife over them.

Super helpful!
First, I want to preface that I am a Christian, married mother of three. Okay, so this book is full of a lot of beneficial information regarding all things that have to do with our "female parts". Even if your mother was more open and shared with you some information about your vulva area, this book is very helpful! I would have given it four stars, because there were some parts of the book I could have done without having to read, but since that is purely personal preference and my own sensitivity, I had to give it five.
It is not a book to read to your hormonal teenage daughter, but excellent for older, more mature women. It also has helped me a lot in how I speak to my girls about their bodies and how to care for them. It also dispels some old wives tales that most of us grew up on on the the care of our delicate areas. It is a book that helps to not only understand, but also appreciate what God made! There are a lot of books out there on yoga--some touch on the concept of "yoga and fertility"--but this is the only one that I've found that does such an excellent job linking yoga and fertility together!

This book describes a number of different topics under that heading, including why certain poses are appropriate for increasing good blood flow to pelvic region and follicle stimulation to produce good quality eggs. Where many yoga books will discuss form with some yoga history, this book is unique because discusses which poses are crucial to do at which phases of the cycle (menstrual and even IVF!) by backing up the information with biological knowledge and yoga tradition. Lastly, I really appreciate this book because it not only focuses on the concept of "yoga and fertility" with pregnancy in mind--but also expands that definition to broadened the idea of fertility to our bodies being a fertile ground at any point that you come to yoga. Fantastic Book!

The book does a great job of laying out easy to follow routines. I've gone to yoga classes for years, but I've never felt comfortable doing a routine at home, at least not until now. I simply follow the routine for the half of the cycle that relates to me, knowing that each position has a specific purpose for nourishing and supporting my body. I'd highly recommend this book!

Clear and easy to follow

I have been told that I should avoid strenuous exercise to conceive, (I am in my forties and trying to get pregnant for the first time!) so I was happy to find this book on yoga and fertility. Not only will I get some daily exercise but the authors have written clear explanations of how each pose will enhance fertility. The yoga routines are simple enough for a beginner, but there are also intermediate routines for those who might have more experience. The instructions and pictures are very clear and helpful. Supplemental information on lifestyle, diet, and other "alternative" approaches to fixing infertility are thorough and informative. An excellent book, that has given me hope in my quest to have a baby, in spite of what my doctors are telling me!

I was curious to read Master's book because I have been hypnotized several times myself - though in a therapeutic setting, not a sexual setting. I haven't yet tried the techniques outlined in Master's book (though I've passed my copy off to my partner and am curious to see where things go) but I can say, speaking from my own experience of being hypnotized many times, that Masters has written an excellent guide to hypnosis for the lay person. His instructions are clear and very detailed and he often explains the reasoning behind his instructions as well so that the reader will be able to confidently adapt the techniques for individual situations. Masters even covers many of the "glitches" I personally experienced as a hypnosis subject and explains ways to avoid or minimize those situations.

I bought this book based on the Amazon reviews and I'm glad I did. This book is for everyone; I am most certainly not the average victim of low libido - I'm 24 years old, no children, and in a committed loving relationship. It cleared up so many things for me; so much so that my therapist is buying it to recommend to his other patients. "The Hite Report" (on female sexuality) is a seminal and indispensible text. It is by turn shocking, inspiring, disturbing, titillating, and sometimes boring, but always informative. What you get is practically PURE information, but of a sort rarely found elsewhere -- if sex weren't sex, the report would be a bone-dry academic snoozefest. Along with a bit of methodology and comment, the book's content is simply collected testimonies of American womens' subjective experiences of their sexuality. The reader is left to draw his or her own conclusions. As a study it assumes no strong thesis (unlike some of Hite's later work), therefore as a critic one can't say much more about it. That said, although the good people at Amazon insist we reviewers focus on the "product," I have something to add about my experience of the "product" that may be of more interest.

I read this book when it first came out in 1976. I was 13 at the time, and boy oh boy did it make a big impression on me. I am so glad I had this book at a young age, so that, growing up, I knew from the get go that I was a normal, healthy girl. This is an amazingly informative book. I have to say that I disagree with the above reviewer in that I do not believe the book and its graphic content were there for simply "shock value", but were actual feelings, of actual women, from all over the United States. The fact that it was so graphic is perhaps an eye opener, but all the contents are presented in a fashion that makes it obvious that this is a serious work and not some sort of sleaze. All heterosexual males should read this book, because there is not a better reference of information regarding womens sexuality to be found. Highly recommended.

amazing, revelatory, empowering

as a survivor of rape and sexual abuse, i have read a bunch of books on the aftereffects of assault, being a survivor, et cetera, but most of the stuff out there is pretty dry and basic and i just didn't find it very helpful. this book is direct, incredibly right-on, it gives you hands on techniques for staying present in your body, it includes an amazing discussion of triggering. it also uses down to earth language and is not too self-help-y, and it acknowledges that certain terms might be alienating and medicalizing for some people.
FYI: although it is targetted at female survivors of child sexual abuse, i myself am not a woman, and the sexual assault/abuse i experienced occured during my teenage years, not my childhood. i still found the book very useful. there is also a great chapter aimed at partners of survivors.

I've been waiting for someone to write a book like this
For the past eight years, I have been slowly, painstakingly discovering for myself many of the techniques that Staci Haines details in this book. As far as I am aware, I am not a survivor of child sexual abuse, but I have many of the same difficulties - lack of trust, unclear boundaries, easily triggered, difficulty being sexually present.
I looked at books on recovery; they seemed only to tell me that it was OK to not have sex. I looked at TONS of books on sex and none addressed my difficulties - until The Survivor's Guide to Sex. I think this is an amazing resource to really get people thinking about themselves as sexual beings. It encompasses a wide range of sexual options and also gives good information about sex-related topics (such as communication). I especially appreciate that this book isn't about a specific disability or illness, and it recognizes the ways in which disabilities can be enabling during sex as well. I definatly reccomend this book to people with disabilities and without disabilities-- I guarentee you'll learn something new.

This book contains soft-core representations of most of the basic sex positions that most people seem to be aware of. There are a few interesting ideas, but quite a few of the same positions are recycled with the inclusion of various sex toys and emblazoned with another silly name. Be prepared to see the exact same couple on every page.

Fun to read together

Many of the positions are slight deviations of each other but it still stimulates the adventerous thought process. It is a fun book to look at with your partner to stimulate arousal. I bought it used so it was worth it.

Too Many Slight Variations, Pictures And Related Text Often Not On The Same Page!
I bought this book among many choices because it had real people demonstrating the sexual positions and that the printed version had 640 pages in color.

After purchasing, I discovered that even slight changes in position were given different names, so meaningful positions are much fewer. In practice, it would be hard to remember these positions when the difference is so little.

If you are buying the Kindle version, be aware that many of the pictures and related texts are NOT on the same page, making learning to try each position much less convenient, as you have to page back and forth to try to understand the text and the picture.

Furthermore, in the last section of the printed book, there are "checklists" of positions - small pictures of 5 X 5 = 25 positions/pictures per page (7 pages total) that can help the reader to quickly choose ones to try. I read this book mostly because I think Barbara is awesome and also because I want to learn how to have better, more fulfilling sex and I identify as being in the relentless pursuit of my joy. This book was beyond anything I imagined it was going to be.

I entered my Master's degree program in Religious Studies in 1990 with the intention of writing my thesis on some component of sex and religion. For months I struggled with the ambiguity of my topic before choosing another topic; one considered more realistically manageable, as well as less controversial. I never lost interest in the subject matter, however. "Ecstasy is Necessary" is a non-regrettable reminder of my idle research and an inspiration for me to find a place in my writing for my lingering personal and academic curiosity for the way humans reconcile their sensual desires to their spiritual endeavors.

Kind of eye opening

Unfortunately, my dating history is pretty... friendzone-centric, so the premise of the book really spoke to me. And I think it delivered for the most part, as it really allowed me to understood why I fall into the friendzone so much. He has 20 "chemistry principles", zero of which I did in the past.

I also really liked that the author really related to normal guys and didn't go all pickup artist on me. His examples to create chemistry were really realistic for even someone like me to do.

Everyone can learn something from this

I gotta say, the phrase "I just don't think of you that way" strikes a nerve in me. I may have been labeled a nice guy before as well, so this book definitely intrigued me. I like and appreciate the fact that this isn't a pick up artist-y book that tells you the solution is simply to change yourself completely. Instead, he illustrates what works when wooing a girl and creating chemistry, and gives you steps and examples on how to do it yourself.

My favorite part was when he talked about text and phone game. After reading his 10 commandments, I was embarrassed thinking about how I used to approach it.

Having read many instructional manuals on the subject of sex, far too many are written from the perspective of clinical practice and not in layman terms. Jessica has done a fantastic job in keeping it simple, interesting and easy to follow. Techniques are visually explained in great detail and are very easy to follow. The other great point is that a lot of information is packed into a small package and this "sex manual" can be easily placed close at hand on a side table. The cover is by no means discreet so if you have kids it may be an issue if you keep this book on a side table but other than that it is probably one of the best books on the subject of sex ever written. My wife bought this for us and we both loved every minute of reading it! I am now recommending it to colleagues and friends.

This is a gorgeous book. Dr Jess has done a fantastic job blending technical know-how into an easy-to-follow guide.
